Gilliam Autism Rating Scales-2

Author: James E. Gilliam, PhD

The Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2 (GARS-2) assists professionals in the diagnosis of autism, utilizing input from parents, teachers, and others who regularly observe the individual. GARS-2 items are based on the definition of autism developed by the Autism Society of America and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Ed. (DSM-IV). Objective, frequency-based ratings quantify specific, measurable behaviors: Stereotyped Behaviors, Communication, and Social Interaction. A structured interview form provides information about the child's early development. Normed on 1,107 individuals, the GARS-2 is psychometrically sound, with high reliability and validity coefficients, and differentiates persons with autism from those with other behavior disorders.

Administration and Scoring

The GARS-2 can be easily completed in approximately 5 to 10 minutes; subtest and overall ratings are reported as standard scores and percentile ranks.
